Prior to that, he worked as a department head and executive secretary in the Znamya Yunosti newspaper, and was one of the founders of the RID news agency (Advertising and Digest). In the summer of 2020, he actively covered socio-political events in Belarus, hosted the then popular streams of Radio Liberty. Roman Protasevich is a Belarusian blogger and journalist.

In the summer of 2020, during mass protests against the falsification of the presidential elections, he was the editor-in-chief of the NEXTA telegram channel. After leaving NEXTA, he became the editor-in-chief of the Belarus Brain telegram channel, which was previously administered by political prisoner Igor Losik . Both channels were recognized as extremist by the Belarusian authorities.

On May 23, 2021, as a result of the forced landing by the Belarusian authorities of a Ryanair passenger airliner flying on the Athens-Vilnius route, Roman Protasevich was detained at the National Airport of Minsk by representatives of the special services. It is known that Sofia Sapieha, a student at the European Humanities University, was arbitrarily detained with him.

On May 3, 2023, the verdict was announced to the novel, until the verdict came into force, Roman was left under house arrest.

On May 22, 2023, he was pardoned.
