Pavel was convicted of "desecration of state symbols." According to the prosecution, he tore a state flag from a store building, then began waving it, hitting the flagpole against the building's parapet, causing it to break. He then threw the flagpole, its torn flag, into a puddle and walked on it.
According to human rights activists, he was released in the spring of 2024, having fully served his sentence.
