Nikolai was found guilty in October 2021 of "insulting a government official" for a comment he left on VKontakte under a post in the "Nexta" group about a driver for the Brest Regional Executive Committee's Special Purpose Police Department, Senior Sergeant Shukailo.

He was released in July 2023, having fully served his sentence.
