Zotova had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor and was undergoing complex rehabilitation. Zotova was charged under Article 369 of the Criminal Code (insulting police officers) for her online comments and sentenced to one year of restricted freedom without being sent to an open correctional facility. Zotova was also ordered to pay 300 rubles in compensation for emotional distress to the police officers.
