Ilya was found guilty in August 2021 of "organizing and preparing actions that grossly violate public order, or actively participating in them," for participating in a protest on September 23, 2020, on Freedom Square in Minsk. According to the charges, he acted in concert with unidentified individuals, shouted slogans, repeatedly refused to comply with police orders, and obstructed the arrest of one of the protesters, for which he was detained. Ilya pleaded not guilty.
In January 2025, a court hearing in absentia was held as part of a special proceeding to replace the restriction of freedom with a referral to imprisonment in a penal colony.

How to write a letter

✍️️ Remember that every letter is censored. This means that your letters are read by strangers whose main goal is to limit inmates' access to information or to use it against the prisoners or even you.
So try to avoid:

👉 statements against the authorities and public servants
👉 foul language
👉 discussion of the circumstances of the criminal case
